What is lot traceability software?

What is lot traceability software?
Lot traceability software records a batch number on every material movement — receiving, production, shipping — so you can answer two questions fast: what went into this lot (backward trace), and where did this lot go (forward trace). What’s the difference between forward and backward tracing?
Backward tracing starts from a finished lot and walks to its ingredients: which supplier lots went in, when they arrived, and their certificates. Forward tracing starts from a suspect ingredient lot and walks out: which production runs consumed it, which finished lots resulted, and which customers received them. A real recall needs both, plus a mass balance proving every unit is accounted for.
What is a mock recall, and how often do I need one?
A mock recall is a timed fire drill: pick a lot, pretend it’s contaminated, and prove you can trace it both directions with quantities that reconcile. SQF and BRCGS require a tested recall program at least annually; PrimusGFS expects one every six months; customers like Costco expect 100% accuracy in under two hours. Does FSMA 204 apply to me?
The FDA’s Food Traceability Rule (compliance date July 2028) applies to foods on the Food Traceability List, with exemptions for very small businesses. In practice the deadline that matters is your customers’: Walmart, Kroger, and Costco already require lot-level traceability from suppliers regardless of FDA exemptions. The data FSMA asks for — lot codes plus key data elements at receiving, transformation, and shipping — is exactly what TrackFinch records.
Can it quarantine a lot until QC clears it?
Yes. Flag an item as "hold until released" and every delivery arrives quarantined — invisible to picking and production until someone reviews the paperwork and releases it. You can also hold, reject, or mark any lot recalled at any time, and it drops out of every pick list instantly.
Does it handle expiry dates and FEFO picking?
Every lot carries an expiry date (auto-filled from the item’s shelf life at receiving), and shipping and production consume first-expired-first-out from released lots automatically. Expiring stock shows up on the dashboard and in a scheduled email digest before it becomes waste.
Do I have to type lot numbers at the receiving dock?
No — scanning the GS1-128 barcode on a supplier’s case label fills in the lot number and expiry date on a phone. Typed entry works too, and anything left blank gets an auto-generated lot so the chain never silently breaks.
